Whale Breaching off of the South Shore at Kipu Kai (Kauai)
Humpback Whale, Breaching, Kauai, Whale Watching
Humpback whales are known to return to their birthing areas. Scientists use the whale’s tails like fingerprints, to identify the whales and track their migrations. Mother whales with their babies gravitate towards depths of 60-200 feet. For giving birth, the whales like the water to be very calm and clear. A main concern for the babies are the predatory tiger sharks which populate the warm, Hawaiian waters. These sharks tend to attack their prey from below the water’s surface, making clear water much easier for the mother whales to fend them off in.
